TRAIL REPORT

Hello, TNAB'ers:

It's good to be back! Big thanks to Dan for picking up the TR last week, as well as prepping the website for the 2005 season. Now, it's time to get to some serious hiking!

This week's target: Tiger Mountain. Joining me were Dan and Drew. Given it's close proximity off I-90, Tiger is easily one of the most crowded hikes on the schedule. Still, it's a decent mountain with lots of options - it is literally covered with trails.

For this hike, though, Dan and I wanted to take the most direct route possible to the summit of West Tiger-3, which is the "Cable Line". Tickets to the "Queens of the Stone Age" concert will do that (awesome show, WOO!). For his part, Drew had never been on Tiger before, so it was all good.

We started on the trail right at 5:30 PM. The "Cable Line" is well described (a line) and features few switches - good el/effort. Conditions were actually pretty good, although some sections were very muddy. Based on my observations of the weather forecasts leading up to this hike, I fully expected a wet experience, if not a complete rain-out. Happily, neither happened, as it was bright and partly sunny for most of the trek. As we neared the summit, however, we could see isolated showers to the east and south - thankfully they missed us!

We made the summit by 6:30 PM, did the obligatory hangout for a couple minutes and took some pictures. Met some folks early for the "meeting". On the way down, Dan won the "Male-Centric Statement" award - gotta be careful what you say out there! :) We were back at the car by 7:30 PM. I recorded a few splotches of mud on the pantlegs, but that was it. Good early season hike - nice to exit without using the headlamp!

NEXT HIKE: Who's up for Dirty Harry's Peak? We could do Rattlesnake, but the feeling I get is it's time for a full scale TNAB hike. Long range forecast good, but subject to change on a whim.

SILLY BUT FUN: What does "TNAB" really mean? "Toe Nails Are Black"? "There Never Are Breaks"? TNAB actually became the focus of such conjecture (see: http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9117&highlight=tnab ).

Send me your submission, and we'll build a list throughout the season to feature on the TR.
Next year, TNAB haikus :)
R&R, -Mark
