TRAIL REPORT
An intrepid group of dedicated souls met up at the Albertson's parking lot in Eastgate at our usual time tonight for the inaugural hike of the 2005 hiking season!
As I spent the afternoon in Kirkland gazing out at the torrential downpour that continued non-stop from 12-4pm, I was *really* beginning to wonder if anyone was actually going to show up tonight... fortunately the gods of hiking were with us tonight and it wasn't raining when we met up in Eastgate.
Four of us in all: Joan, Don, Drew and I for the traditional "kickoff" hike of the TNAB season, Little Si. We quickly organized ourselves and jumped into Drew's truck for an uneventful drive.
After parking by the river and a quick jaunt down the road to the trailhead, we started a rain-free hike at 5:40pm. A great deal of work has been down on the lower trails since last season, so there were only a few mud puddles and some water to deal with. Of course it wouldn't be the initial hike of the year without rain! It started coming down a few minutes before we hit the summit at 6:20p, a nice wet mix of hail and rain.
With the time change behind us it was still full daylight and the view was quite good, cloud, rain, and a sun just starting towards the horizon. After a quick snack on chocolate we departed the summit, setting a TNAB first by NOT consuming any sort of "adult beverage" on the opening hike and headed back down. We hit the trail head again at 7:25p and were back in Eastgate by 8:00pm and it was still light out! Oh well, I guess we'll get to use our headlamps later on in the season.
Next week: Tigger, um, I mean Tiger, and no, we aren't going to join the meeting. Assuming Mark is feeling better (he has a nasty cold) expect the TR coming from him.
Hike photos will be up later this evening here: http://www.tnab.net/hike/2005/0407/default.htm The rest of the TNAB website will be updated this weekend.
I hope to see you all next week! -Dan
