Best 4 Man Tent Under $100: Wenzel Ponderosa 10′ x 8′ Four Person Two-Room Dome Tent

If you are on a budget, and don’t camp very often, this 4 man tent is a pretty good value. It sets up in less than 15 minutes with two people, 30 minutes with one. It can comfortably fit 2 adults and 2 small children, and even comes with a storage bag! This tent is a great bargain for family car camping, but it does have its minor setbacks. Let’s go over the good points first.

The Wenzel Ponderosa is very easy to set up and break down. In fact, one person can set it up, but two people are recommended to hold the rods steady as the dome tent is being erected. The divider curtain provides privacy when needed, and the top of the tent is nearly all mesh, which makes it great for star gazing and ventilation.

Now for the not so good. Although the tent has a good design, it is made with cheap materials. The poles, fabric, stakes, and flooring are all made with cheap materials. If you plan to go camping less than two or three times a year, this will not present a problem.

Many customer reviews report water leaking through the mesh at the top of the tent, through the fly, and along the seams. Therefore, we do not recommend use in heavy winds, or hard rainy weather. The rain fly does not extend far enough to keep the door from getting wet when it rains.

Although most new tents don’t usually need to be sealed, it is recommended that you spend a few extra dollars, get some seam sealer, and seal your tent prior to use. On the other hand, the reviews also revealed that the tent held up well in light drizzling rain.

Now the title says “4 man tent, ” but this tent is really ideal for 2 people. 4 people with no gear can fit, but it will be extra tight. 2 to 3 people could fit reasonably well with gear, but for all purposes intended, this should be called a 2 man tent.

Another concern is that the rain fly uses a bow pole, which causes tension across the door, and makes the zipper snag. This can be alleviated by using two people to set up the tent. One person holds the poles steady as the tent is being set up by the other person.

Also, the bottom of door is about 8″ high, and is easily tripped over in the dark. This is especially true for young children under age 12, in the light or the dark. Because the floor of the tent is made of very thin material, you may need to purchase a tarp or footprint to go underneath the tent to prevent damage and holes.

Minimal headroom was another issue. If you’re 5’1 you’ll be able to stand up, but most people will have to bend. Speaking of tight fits, the storage bag that comes with the tent could stand to be a little larger, and include a carrying handle to accommodate the ties and strings. Trying to roll the tent up so tight that it will fit back in the bag, only increases your chances of ripping the seams. Once the seams tear, the life of your tent has ended.

If you plan to pitch your tent in sandy ground, then we recommend buying longer stronger stakes. And also make sure you have a tent mallet to hammer the stakes down, because this tent does not come with one. Tent mallets are very inexpensive, and can be purchased on our site as well.

Weighing all the pros and cons, this tent is a very good value for the price. If you’re looking for a tent to go camping in frequently, then this is not the best choice. However, if you are a novice camper, who will be camping in good weather, then this tent is ideal, and will suit your needs just fine.
